Common Questions

What does an initial psychiatric assessment involve?

Initial Psychiatric Assessments/Consultation involves a 2-hour session; I usually prefer to start with the child and parents together to review perspectives and concerns. The second portion typically involves a one-on-one meeting with your child to further explore their personal perspective, their associated feelings, and to develop a more direct sense about their psychological, emotional and social self. The third phase usually allows for your child to have a "break" while I talk with you as parents about other issues more appropriately discussed in an adult context, as well as providing you with initial impressions and recommendations.

What age range do you treat?

I am currently limiting my practice to children and adolescents age 3-17; when young adults are approaching a few months before 18 years of age, I am supportive of an assessment by an adult psychiatrist rather than initiating this treatment relationship for only a few months.

What role does medication have in the overall treatment process?

The role of medication is individualized and assessed in an ongoing manner, starting at the initial psychiatric assessment; please see Medication Information link for specific medication information

Do you accept insurance? How does insurance work?

Dr. Pois is not an "in-network" provider with health insurance panels; this means that you are fundamentally responsible at the time of appointments for payment of the associated fees. Many insurance companies, however do have "out-of-network " benefits that represents a portion of the fees that your health insurance will cover. Dr. Pois's office can provide you with an appropriate claim form for you to submit to your insurance provider so that you can pursue this "reimbursement".
To determine if you have mental health coverage, the first thing you should do is check with your insurance carrier. Check your coverage carefully, and find the answers to the following questions:

-What are my mental health benefits?
-What is the coverage amount per therapy session?
-How many therapy sessions does my plan cover?
-How much does my insurance pay for an out-of -network provider?
-Is approval required from my primary care physician?
-Does the initial assessment and follow-up appointments require pre-  certification by the insurance plan in order for you to receive reimbursement?

Is therapy confidential?

In general, the law protects the confidentiality of all communication between a client and therapist. No information is disclosed without prior written permission from the client/guardian. Please see Privacy Policy link for further information
